Bituminous pavement has been used throughout the years due to its low initial cost, low maintenance cost, versatility and performance characteristics. Unfortunately, due to the flexibility of asphaltic pavement and the Midwest's temperature fluctuations, asphaltic pavement requires a continued maintenance effort to protect its value. Furthermore, increases in use and unanticipated vehicular volumes may accelerate the deterioration rate of drive lanes.
